NETBible: They replied, “A man came up to meet us. He told us, “Go back to the king who sent you and tell him, ‘This is what the Lord says: “You must think there is no God in Israel! That explains why you are sending for an oracle from Baal Zebub, the god of Ekron. Therefore you will not leave the bed you lie on, for you will certainly die.”’”

NASB: They said to him, "A man came up to meet us and said to us, ‘Go, return to the king who sent you and say to him, "Thus says the LORD, ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you shall not come down from the bed where you have gone up, but shall surely die.’"’"

HCSB: They replied, "A man came to meet us and said, 'Go back to the king who sent you and declare to him: This is what the LORD says: Is it because there is no God in Israel that you're sending these men to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore, you will not get up from your sickbed--you will certainly die.'"

LEB: They told him that a man came to meet them and said to them, "Go back to the king who sent you. Tell him, ‘This is what the LORD says: Do you send messengers to seek advice from Baalzebub, the god of Ekron, because you think there is no God in Israel? You will not get up from the bed you are lying on. Instead, you will die there.’"

NIV: "A man came to meet us," they replied. "And he said to us, ‘Go back to the king who sent you and tell him, "This is what the LORD says: Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending men to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you will not leave the bed you are lying on. You will certainly die!"’"

ESV: And they said to him, "There came a man to meet us, and said to us, 'Go back to the king who sent you, and say to him, Thus says the LORD, Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up, but you shall surely die.'"

NRSV: They answered him, "There came a man to meet us, who said to us, ‘Go back to the king who sent you, and say to him: Thus says the LORD: Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you shall not leave the bed to which you have gone, but shall surely die.’"

REB: They answered that a man had come to meet them and had ordered them to return to the king who had sent them and say, “This is the word of the LORD: Is there no God in Israel, that you send to enquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron? In consequence, you will not rise from the bed where you are lying; you will die.”

NKJV: So they said to him, "A man came up to meet us, and said to us, ‘Go, return to the king who sent you, and say to him, "Thus says the LORD: ‘ Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending to inquire of Baal–Zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up, but you shall surely die.’"’"

KJV: And they said unto him, There came a man up to meet us, and said unto us, Go, turn again unto the king that sent you, and say unto him, Thus saith the LORD, [Is it] not because [there is] not a God in Israel, [that] thou sendest to enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron? therefore thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.

NLT: They replied, "A man came up to us and said, ‘Go back to the king and give him this message from the LORD: Why are you sending men to Baal–zebub, the god of Ekron, to ask whether you will get well? Is there no God in Israel? Now, since you have done this, you will never leave the bed on which you are lying, but you will surely die.’"

GNB: They answered, “We were met by a man who told us to come back and tell you that the LORD says to you, ‘Why are you sending messengers to consult Baalzebub, the god of Ekron? Is it because you think there is no god in Israel? You will not recover from your injuries; you will die!’”

ERV: The messengers said to Ahaziah, “A man came up to meet us and told us to go back to the king who sent us and tell him what the LORD says: ‘There is a God in Israel, so why did you send messengers to ask questions of Baal Zebub, the god of Ekron? Since you did this, you will not get up from your bed. You will die!’”

BBE: And they said to him, On our way we had a meeting with a man who said, Go back to the king who sent you and say to him, The Lord says, Is it because there is no God in Israel that you send to put a question to Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? For this reason, you will not come down from the bed on to which you have gone up, but death will certainly come to you.

MSG: They told him, "A man met us and said, 'Turn around and go back to the king who sent you; tell him, GOD's message: Is it because there's no God in Israel that you're running off to consult Baal-Zebub god of Ekron? You needn't bother. You're not going to get out of that bed you're in--you're as good as dead already.'"

CEV: "A man met us along the road with a message for you from the LORD," they answered. "The LORD wants to know why you sent us to ask Baalzebub about your injury and why you don't believe there's a God in Israel. The man also told us that the LORD says you're going to die."

CEVUK: “A man met us along the road with a message for you from the Lord,” they answered. “The Lord wants to know why you sent us to ask Baalzebub about your injury and why you don't believe there's a God in Israel. The man also told us that the Lord says you're going to die.”

GWV: They told him that a man came to meet them and said to them, "Go back to the king who sent you. Tell him, ‘This is what the LORD says: Do you send messengers to seek advice from Baalzebub, the god of Ekron, because you think there is no God in Israel? You will not get up from the bed you are lying on. Instead, you will die there.’"

NET [draft] ITL: They replied <0559>, “A man <0376> came up <05927> to meet <07125> us. He told <0559> us, “Go <01980> back <07725> to <0413> the king <04428> who <0834> sent <07971> you and tell <01696> him, ‘This is what <03541> the Lord <03068> says <0559>: “You must think there <0369> is no <0369> God <0430> in Israel <03478>! That explains why you <0859> are sending <07971> for an oracle <01875> from Baal Zebub <01176>, the god <0430> of Ekron <06138>. Therefore <03651> you will not <03808> leave <05927> the bed <04296> you lie on <03381>, for <03588> you will certainly die <04191> <04191>.”’”
