NETBible: Look at ships too: Though they are so large and driven by harsh winds, they are steered by a tiny rudder wherever the pilot’s inclination directs.

NASB: Look at the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desires.

HCSB: And consider ships: though very large and driven by fierce winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs.

LEB: Behold also ships: [although they] are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot wishes.

NIV: Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.

ESV: Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs.

NRSV: Or look at ships: though they are so large that it takes strong winds to drive them, yet they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs.

REB: Or think of a ship: large though it may be and driven by gales, it can be steered by a very small rudder on whatever course the helmsman chooses.

NKJV: Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires.

KJV: Behold also the ships, which though [they be] so great, and [are] driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.

NLT: And a tiny rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot wants it to go, even though the winds are strong.

GNB: Or think of a ship: big as it is and driven by such strong winds, it can be steered by a very small rudder, and it goes wherever the pilot wants it to go.

ERV: It is the same with ships. A ship is very big, and it is pushed by strong winds. But a very small rudder controls that big ship. And the one who controls the rudder decides where the ship will go. It goes where he wants it to go.

EVD: It is the same with ships. A ship is very big, and it is pushed by strong winds. But a very small rudder controls that big ship. The man who controls the rudder decides where the ship will go. The ship goes where the man wants.

BBE: And again ships, though they are so great and are moved by violent winds, are turned by a very small guiding-blade, at the impulse of the man who is using it.

MSG: A small rudder on a huge ship in the hands of a skilled captain sets a course in the face of the strongest winds.

Phillips NT: Ships too, for all their size and the momentum they have with a strong wind behind them, are controlled by a very small rudder according to the course chosen by the helmsman.

CEV: It takes strong winds to move a large sailing ship, but the captain uses only a small rudder to make it go in any direction.

CEVUK: It takes strong winds to move a large sailing ship, but the captain uses only a small rudder to make it go in any direction.

GWV: The same thing is true for ships. They are very big and are driven by strong winds. Yet, by using small rudders, pilots steer ships wherever they want them to go.

NET [draft] ITL: Look at <2400> ships <4143> too <2532>: Though they are <1510> so large <5082> and <2532> driven <1643> by <5259> harsh <4642> winds <417>, they are steered <3329> by <5259> a tiny <1646> rudder <4079> wherever <3699> the pilot’s <3730> inclination <1014> directs <2116>.
